With summer at a close, gather friends and head to the beach for a Clambake!

With summer at a close, and a nip of fall in the air.... pull on your sweater, gather friends and head to the beach for a

  New England Style Clambake!!

Since this is a 'clambake', use a crustacean (or bucket of....) on your invitations.  We found this one online!

Set the Scene

In addition to bringing the food, throw a folding table and chairs into the trunk.  Once you get to the beach decorate the table with....

A red and white gingham tablecloth

Pedestal glass bowls mounded with seashells

Glass hurricanes containing pillar candles

Slipcovers for the folding chairs

French Flower Buckets filled with wildflowers (or grasses) found near the beach

Place lanterns around the perimeter of the party site

Build a fire pit, for a bonfire once the sun goes down

The main activity of this party is the clambake.  Starting with a large hole in the sand, this technique was introduced to the first American settlers by their Native American hosts.  Have everyone get involved. Here are 'how to' instructions.

Set up a volleyball net and divide the group into 2 teams.  Have one team challenge the other, while it's still daylight.

Send everyone down the beach to collect unique beach 'treasures'.  Give them 30 minutes, to see what they can find.  Once everyone has returned have them vote on the most unique item found.

Start a bonfire.  If one of the guests has a guitar, turn off the Jimmy Buffett music, and opt for "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore"!!

The star of the show is the clambake. This delicious meal utilizes an ancient technique, which our forefathers learned from hospitable Native Americans hundreds of years ago.  Start with a hole in the sand, light the fire, line with seaweed, add seafood, corn, sausage and potatoes....Cover with sand and 'Voila!'.... A Clambake!!  Here are 'how to' directions.

Set out a sumptuous feast including the roasted foods from the clambake pit and these 'sides' prepared at home.....

A beach event without Jimmy Buffett??  Impossible!  This is our favorite of his recordings!
