It's All Hallows Eve. A remote and forbidding country estate rises out of the mist on a bleak, barren landscape. Outside, a howling wind and claps of distant thunder foretell the advance of a menacing storm. Inside the manor, ill-fated guests face the eerie light of vengeful spirits. A sense of foreboding permeates, as ancient prophecies fill one and all with a sense of doom.

Invite guests to spend an evening of fear and dread in your manor house. Host a gothic....

Invitations

Offer guests the promise of mournful cries in the night and echoing footsteps in deserted hallways with this Edgar Allan Poe inspired invitation (....Quote the raven nevermore). Request that all come dressed in costume, appropriate for an evening in the abandoned drawing room of a crumbling country estate. And, oh yes, advise them to be afraid....Very, Very Afraid.

Set the Scene

Weave a web of deceit by creating an abandoned drawing room with....

Flickering candles in ominous jack-o-lanterns lining the walk to the entry.
Dark purple satin draping the walls.
A black table cloth topped with worn, yellowed lace.
Candle light only, no electric lighting, please.
Gothic candelabras.
Cobwebs gathering in corners.
A portrait (or perhaps we meant poster) of the manor house hanging above the fireplace.
Bouquets of dead and blackened roses in vases.
Old sheets covering the furniture.
Old , clouded mirrors to reflect ghostly apparitions gliding about the drawing room.
Ancestral portraits hanging on the walls.
A fog machine to create "other-worldly" eeriness.

Activities

Set up a Ouija Board so that your guests can "speak" directly to the dearly departed...may they Rest In Peace.
Hire a professional actor to read "The Raven" or perhaps "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" to terrify your guests.
A costume competition. The Lord or Lady in the most convincing "gothic" dress wins.
In a separate "chamber", schedule a screening of a vintage horror film, such as Bela Lugosi's "Dracula".
Hire a local fortune teller to read tea leaves, tarot cards or the palms of your guests.
