...How to!
Make it a Surprise!

  • The key to a successful surprise party is PLANNING.  The birthday person will be on the alert, especially if it is the big one.... you know 30, 40, 50, etc.  Here is your outline for success:
  • Start planning 4 to 6 weeks in advance.
  • Keep all records and receipts hidden from the honoree.  Make all phone calls out of ear shot.
  • To keep the honoree from suspecting, let them know you are planning a small family celebration at their favorite restaurant.
  • Make sure your invites are very clear, this is a "surprise" party.
  • Enlist a friend to provide a diversion the day of and take responsibility for getting him/her to the party at the appointed time.  (Don't worry about their attire you can have a change of clothes on hand)
  • Make sure all guests arrive one 1/2  hour early.  If this is not possible, they should come after the honoree arrives.  Give all guests clear instruction as to where to park their cars (out of sight).   Better yet, have a valet (a friend) park the cars.
  • Have drinks, appetizers and an activity planned for the guests while they wait for the guest of honor to arrive.
  • Just before the expected arrival time have the guests hide and tell them to be QUIET.  If you are having this at home, another fun way to surprise the guest of honor is to have everyone gather in the garage.  When the honoree drives up and the garage door opens...Surprise!
  • Time to Party!!
